I used to sing that in the shower! EWWW!

I honestly knew little to nothing about Freud before the reading and class discussions. Now, it's like we're best friends because I see something related to him almost everywhere I go. I don't only see his concepts, I can hear them in contemporary music.
I'm going to focus on one song in particular - "Daughters" by John Mayer. (Here's a link to the lyrics for those who don't know: http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/johnmayer/daughters.html).
Basically, in the song John Mayer explains that the daughter is the dad's whole world when she's young and he tries to give her his heart. Then, she goes through a change and turns into a "lover". This song perfectly corresponds to Freud's third essay.
He explained that when kids go through puberty, they move away from parental authority; thus, the daughters transformation into a lover. Also, the child daughter:dad relationship follows Frued's Oedipus complex.
The song supports masculinity when it explains, "Boys will be strong and boys soldier on." It creates a division between femininity because it says men look out for girls. This creates the idea that women are dependent on men for security.
There's so many Freud connections in this song that I never even thought to think of. I expect to be drawing many more connections in the future as well.
