Ideology v Biology?

I think that our definitions of man and woman are definitely more heavily impacted by ideology than by biology.  We discussed in lecture this week about how there are not many things that a man can do that a woman cannot.  (We talked about body building and how women are very capable of body building as well - and in fact, if a man has too much testosterone, his body will turn it into estrogen).  I think it is the long believed gender stereotypes that form our definitions of male and female.  I think that because these things (women are inferior to men, their place should be in the home, men should be the head of the family, etc) have been commonplace for such a long time, they are automatically accepted as the norm.  So, even though biology does not dictate these things for us, it is comfortable to stay in the normal.

However, something that stuck out to me in discussion was that sometimes people can get pleasure out of rebelling, or straying from the norm.  This was a really interesting point to me.  Maybe if people explore the possibilities outside of the norm and outside of what we believe to be "gender normal" or accepted with our genders, we can make some progress.
