"It's easy to follow the crowd-but it takes courage to stand out from it"

Something that really sparked my mind in Discussion today was the idea of the notorious quote, "It's easy to follow the crowd-but it takes courage to stand out from it" (sorry if I butchered it!) and associating it with gender norms.

Most of the time, many people like to follow the norm. Many feel comfortable in doing what is supposedly "normal", blending in with the crowd to seem expected. However, it is those that do something different who receive the most amount of attention. And to do something different takes a purposeful amount of effort. In other words, one knows they are straying away from the norm.

I thought this idea, too, was very interesting. To do something irregular is purposeful. In terms of thinking in the realm of ideas from this class, most of the time women do not like to misalign themselves as to what is expected from them. This idea is more explicitly seen in the media, sometimes seen sarcastically or subliminally. Media outlets purposefully place different images of women to maybe make a more lasting impact on their product.

Anyways, I just wanted to word vomit a bit. I had a lot of ideas jumbled in my mind and I just wanted to get them out in this blog! I'm sorry my ideas aren't very much organized but you got the gist, right? :)

  1. I totally agree with what Krysti is saying. We can all say that we need to take a stand, but if we all don't do it simultaneously, or if it doesn't become accepted by popular culture - it's really easy to stomp down any rebellious behavior. It's way easier to do what's comfortable and expected and safe. Got your gist, Krysti!
