In the 13th episode (Season 4) of The Big Bang Theory, Amy asked Penny if she subscribes to the Freudian theory of penis envy as the former thinks it might be nice to have a penis. Amy was having bathroom problems whilst on the long way to their destination, hence she claimed that having a penis for convenience (not sex) is extremely useful. She said "You can't deny that, by comparison, our internal plumbing is extremely high maintenance," This suggests that Amy, as a woman, desires the male sexual organ because she doesn't have one, a situation which, according to Freud, takes place during the psychosexual development stage. Although this scene does not accurately or directly address the said Freudian theory, it is noteworthy that Amy, who is heterosexual and constantly exhibit desire for a romantic relationship with men, has this thought; and perhaps people do not outgrow the process of psychosexual development, but it only becomes inert?
