Ever since I was young, I have always learned of the idea where men want to find wives with personalities like their mother, and women would want to find husbands with personalities like their father. I used to think it was because of it was the ideal role model that each person have for themselves, however upon learning about Freud and Oedipus, I am starting to think that there maybe another reason to why people would want their significant others with those personalities. The idea how a person would have desires for their parents would seem very incest and taboo, however if was portrayed on another person, other than family, it would seem to be the ideal situation and would make more sense. It is often shown in movies where a guy brings a girl home to his house, the siblings would describe that girl as someone that is similar to their mom, making the guy feel like he made the correct decision in dating the girl.
In other situations, terms like "Mommy's boy", or "Daddy's little girl" also has a Oedipus connotation to it. I never would have imagine their would be a desire for the parents, however, its these strong feelings that a boy and a girl has with their parents that makes them so close and listen and implementing to what is told by the parents.
