Man and Woman
From all the reading I've done and all the clips we've watched in class, I've gathered a new definition of what men and women are. Men are seen almost unanimously in all cultures as the heads of households, the main providers, the protectors of the family, and most "importantly", the gender with the penis. Women, on the other hand, are the reproducers, the caregivers, the support team, the child rearers. Although women make up the majority of the population, they are subjugated in society. Gender ideologies and biology have really influenced our perception of what males and females are. Heteronormativity has shaped gender roles in society and biology has defined us anatomically and introduced our biological needs and tasks. Women have been graced with the "weaker" anatomy compared to men. So, by looking at these things, I would say that a woman is a gender that has a limited scope of life due to societal restraints and biological make up. A man is the gender that takes the extra initiative to be more assertive and use the power "bestowed" upon them. Yes, we could also look at men and women based on their anatomy but body size and genital placement shouldn't indicate what you really are. There are people born as hermaphrodites or intersex children, which allow for them to be more sexes but are repressed by society due to the fact that we don't want them humiliated for the rest of their lives so they pick one of the two genders. People should associate to the gender they feel the most comfortable as, not base upon what society wants people to identify with and how their bodies are made up.
