While I do not, under any circumstances, agree with the SCUM Manifesto (I not only enjoy living as a man but also living period), I do appreciate the route Valerie Solanas takes in order to address pertinent issues in society. I believe that comedy or, in this case, biting satire, can be a much more powerful tool than any kind of serious writing. By writing a ridiculous manifesto, Solanas is able to show how little sense Freud's idea of gender actually is. By taking "penis envy" and replacing it with "pussy envy", as well as many other twists on Freud's theory--such as the accidental slip-up of the genes to make a baby male--she illustrates to the world that Freud's ideas are as silly as the Society for Cutting up Men. Satires, because of how ludicrous they are, are able to quickly draw attention to themselves and whatever subject they satire much more effectively than any serious piece Solanas could have written. I believe that, while Solanas might have a few loose screws, she is able to hold a very large, very important mirror up to society that few other could have done without the threat of turning the tables on men...even if some of us read it with our legs tightly crossed.
