Oooh first blog post of the semester.

So the article I found most interesting was Wollstonecraft's piece. At first, I didn't understand what Mahometanism was, but then I looked it up in the dictionary to find it was an archaic form of the word for the religion of Islam. After understanding this, I gathered some other main ideas from the piece, which consisted of: women being seen as insubordinate in most cultures, societies, and religions (like Mahometanism); women are only seen as sexual beings by men, not as another, equal human being; and women are born and raised to think they are inferior their whole lives, in strength and intelligence, and therefore must depend on men. We learned in lecture today that we are imprinted upon from day 1, learning the ropes of race, gender, and society. With the addition of this information with the media and its portrayal of women in alcohol ads, magazines, or the most recent Dr. Pepper commercial that claims "This is not a woman's drink", women and girls are forever kept in the shadow of men. They are highly sexualized and or still portrayed in the same housewife/motherly roles. Wollestonecraft's piece was written in the 18th century; it is now the 21st century. And yet the points she made can still apply to contemporary times. Of course, society isn't all bad for women. There is more equality in the work place and educational system for women. Women do have more power in the world today; however, the points made in the piece still apply to some degree to women in all cultures and societies.
