Not Much of a Melting Pot

As I reflect on everything about American culture and people, it’s discouraging to see how a country that’s regarded as the “melting pot of the world” prefers to keep its “ingredients” from mixing. I think about my parents, who immigrated to the United States from Taiwan for many of the same reasons as most Americans; for a better life. Yet in this country of various races, cultures, backgrounds, and histories, racism is still prevalent today. It seems contradictory to pride ourselves in the “American culture” if we don’t even accept some of the people who contribute to this culture. The color of somebody’s skin has been shaped into being more than just skin-deep. Somehow, we’ve formed a connection between skin color and character. I don’t know if racism will ever go away, but I do hope that our generation and the future generations can start to mix the melting pot and realize that there is a whole lot more to people than just the color of their skin and you could learn so much more if you just practiced some acceptance.
