balanced labor
Though there is a hierarchical structure between the host and the maid, they can still get along well with each other instead of standing in the opposite place. The conflict does exist in this labor system. The clip The Black Girl shows the difference between expectation and reality.I personally think that the movie focuses more on racial conflict rather than labor conflict, because it emphasize the contrast of skin color. In my country, domestic helpers are treated in good manner and they work hard for their employers in return. Oftentimes, a maid who has been serving in one place for years will be regarded as a family member. I have heard several examples like this in my neighborhood, so I believe there is a way fr maids and hosts to live harmonicalally.

I am so glad that domestic labors in your country are lucky to be treated so well! In contrary, that isn't the case in my country. It is true that some but not all of them are treated well and work hard in return, but in my uncle's maid isn't that lucky. I remember the time after she was hired for three months, she fainted because of the severe lack of nutrition and was sent to the hospital. I feel so bad that those domestic labors are not fully protected because they are controlled under the employers they work for but not under the law of the country.
ReplyDeleteDomestic labors are treated well in my neighborhood too. However, I think this "harmony" is only superficial. If you say you respect someone, it means you should trust him or her. However, when maids are working in the house, you still have the worry that they may steal things and run away.
